Healthy teeth and gums are important at every stage of life. At Smile Center for Kids in Sunland and Edgemere TX, we are committed to the dental health of our young patients, and are honored whenever parents demonstrate their trust by making us a part of their child’s wellness team.
Kids need to learn proper dental care at an early age. Even before they’re toddlers, their dental health is important, and it’s up to parents to keep their teeth and gums clean.
As kids start getting a little older, parents can set the right example by taking good care of their own teeth and gums. A big part of how children learn is through observation.
Sometimes kids can be fussy about their dental care, so here are a few strategies for getting them to brush:
- Reward the Behavior: If they brush, you can give them an extra ten minutes playing their favorite video game or watching TV.
- Play Copycat: We mentioned how kids learn through observation; ask them to mimic your own brushing. A lot of kids love imitating their parents!
- Make It Fun: Kids respond well if you make it enjoyable. Play their favorite song as they brush, or sing it yourself!
- Don’t Overdo It: As kids grow up, it will be more important to brush for at least two minutes. But when they’re little, the main thing is to establish good habits. Brushing is the important thing.
